These are different design topologies where we describe how a customer is connected (using BGP) to one or more ISPs.\n\nLet\u2019s take a look at some examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Single homed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The single homed design means you have a single connection to a single ISP. With this design, you don\u2019t need BGP since there is only one exit path in your network. You might as well just use a static default route that points to the ISP.\n\nThe advantage of a single-homed link is that it\u2019s cost effective, the disadvantage is that you don\u2019t have any redundancy. Dual-homed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Design <strong>Dual-homed<\/strong> The dual homed connection adds some redundancy. You are still only connected to a single ISP, but you use two links instead of one. There are some variations for this design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the first one:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"412\" height=\"151\" src=\"https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-homed-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-471\" style=\"width:480px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-homed-1.jpg 412w, https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-homed-1-300x110.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-homed-1-18x7.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 412px) 100vw, 412px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With this design, we use a single router on both ends, but we do have redundant links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To increase redundancy, we can add a second router:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"411\" height=\"221\" src=\"https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-homed-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-472\" style=\"width:480px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-homed-2.jpg 411w, https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-homed-2-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-homed-2-18x10.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 411px) 100vw, 411px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the example above, the ISP has a second router. We also could have used a second router at the customer\u2019s side and a single router at the ISP. For even more redundancy, add a second router at both sides:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"411\" height=\"221\" src=\"https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-homed-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-473\" style=\"width:480px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-homed-3.jpg 411w, https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-homed-3-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-homed-3-18x10.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 411px) 100vw, 411px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The example above offers the most redundancy when you are connected to a single ISP. <br>We have two links and two routers on both ends. One disadvantage of this design is that we are still using a single ISP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can solve this problem by connecting additional Internet service providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Single Multi-homed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Multi-homed<\/strong> means we are connected to at least two different ISPs. The single point of failure in this design is that you only have one router at the customer. When it fails, you won\u2019t be able to connect to any ISP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can improve this by adding a second router:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"372\" height=\"246\" src=\"https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-single-multihomed-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-482\" style=\"width:480px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-single-multihomed-2.jpg 372w, https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-single-multihomed-2-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-single-multihomed-2-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 372px) 100vw, 372px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a pretty good design, we only use single links, but we are connected to two different ISPs using different routers.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>4. Dual Multihomed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Dual multihomed<\/strong> designs means we are connected to two different ISPs, and we use redundant links. We have redundant ISPs and links, but the router is still a single point of failure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can improve this by adding a second router:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"371\" height=\"241\" src=\"https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-multihomed-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-475\" style=\"width:480px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-multihomed-2.jpg 371w, https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-multihomed-2-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-multihomed-2-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 371px) 100vw, 371px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The design above is better; it has two customer routers. One disadvantage, however, is that once one of your router fails, you will lose the connection to one of the ISPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the same number of routers and links, the following design might be better: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"381\" height=\"246\" src=\"https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-multihomed-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-478\" style=\"width:480px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-multihomed-3.jpg 381w, https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-multihomed-3-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kontsevoy.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bgp-dual-multihomed-3-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 381px) 100vw, 381px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This design has redundant ISPs, routers, and links. Both customer routers are connected to both ISPs.
